Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has been essential in transforming wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). What was once referred to as “waste gas” is now being used as a renewable, clean and environmentally-friendly energy source, called biogas. Some of these facilities are even able to produce enough biogas to supply renewable natural gas (RNG) to the natural gas pipeline, or possibly even generate electricity.
Although the innovation of AD in processing wastewater has advanced to some degree, it's core configuration has largely stayed the same since the early 1900s.
Starting the anaerobic digestion process within a tank only requires primary and secondary sludge and the conditions present for the incoming microbes; an oxygen-free, homogenous and warm atmosphere, which provides 15-20 days for these microbes to thrive, decompose solids and produce biogas. In order for this process to run efficiently, the tank must be COVERED, MIXED and HEATED.
