Methanogens are specialized bacteria used for supporting anaerobic reactions that have the tendency to form immobilized granules that settle at the bottom as a sludge, which is the basic principle used in anaerobic bioreactors. Based on this working principle is the UASB reactor. An anaerobic fluidized bed can be designed where the mixer of microbes should be in the form of a biofilm that is grown in carrier particles and fluidized using energy from the feed stream.
