Anaerobic Digestion has been integral to enable wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to ultimately transform into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The so-called “waste gas” that is only emitted in such facilities is in fact usable as biogas, serving as an entirely renewable, clean, and green energy source. Further, depending on the setup, some WWTPs are even able to generate enough RNG (renewable natural gas) to pump into pipelines, as well as to power back to the grid.

Despite numerous advancements in other areas, the basic structure of anaerobic digestion systems remain almost the same as it was in the early 1900s. Necessary for the initiation of the process, the tanks employed at WWTPs require sufficient primary and secondary sludge, combined with an oxygen-free, homogenous environment, and temperatures that reach into the 15 to 20 degrees Celsius range. The process also requires the tanks to be covered, mixed, and heated in order for the microbes and solids to decompose completely and generate biogas.
